Posted by fplanque on Sep 09, 2011 in New releases

b2evolution version 4.1.0-beta was released.

Download here »

This is a beta release. We are running it on production ourselves and are pretty happy with it at this point. Otherwise we would have called it "alpha" ;) Just be aware there may be some minor bugs that might annoy you until they get fixed ;)

A great part of the development effort oin this release went into simplifying day to day operations, thus making b2evolution easier and smoother to use, for administrators and site visitors equally.

You will find a mouthful of new features and enhancements listed below...

Please let us know what you like most and what you're still missing to make it perfect! (For bug reports, please go to the forums.)

b2evolution 4.0.5 (stable) released & security fix

Posted by fplanque on Aug 25, 2011 in New releases, b2evolution.net

b2evolution 4.0.5 was released some time ago containing an important security fix.

It is recommended that everyone upgrades to that version.

Download here »

We originally released this silently so that people would have time to upgrade without drawing any more attention to the security issue.

It is now time that people who don't nomally upgrade minor versions consider doing so too.

You might wait for b2evolution 4.1 -- to be released in a couple of weeks -- but be advised that b2evo 4.1 will be released as a beta whereas 4.0.5 is released as a stable version.

We will point more specifically to the issue once everyone now warned has been given a chance to upgrade either to v 4.0.5-stable or v 4.1-beta.

Note: the threat level for this issue is considred Moderate (2/5), but still, we want to give you time to upgrade before letting the bad guys know exactly where to look.

b2evolution 4.0.4 (stable) released

Posted by fplanque on Mar 13, 2011 in New releases

b2evolution 4.0.4 (stable) has been released.

Download here »

This release contains fixes for bugs that have been reported in b2evolution 4.0.3.

All credits for this release go to Alex who backported the fixes from the development branch for b2evo 4.1 back to the 4.0 stable branch.

In some situations, installing version 4.0.3 may have displayed a PHP warning message on your blog. This release addresses this issue. The other fixes are less critical. Nethertheless, if you have been waiting for a bug fix that has been addressed in the forums, it is likely you will find it in this release.

If you are running 4.0.3 and you have no issues with it, you don't need to upgrade to version 4.0.4.

We also have the first contributed language pack for b2evolution 4.0. It is for Spanish. Download here »

The next release will likely be 4.1.0-beta (no release date yet).

b2evolution 4.0.3 (stable) released

b2evolution 4.0.3 (stable) has been released.

Here it is! Finally! The stable version of b2evolution version 4!

This is a recommended upgrade for all users that have issues with spam!

This version has been one year in the making. If you look back at feature lists for the alpha and beta releases, it is pretty impressive how many new features have been added, as well as the polishing of existing features to make the usage of the software more efficient. There also have been quite a few additions to make spam cleaning a breeze with one click javascript (Ajax) actions.

This stable release does not bring any major changes compared to version 4.0.2-beta. It mainly cleans up a few help texts and has an updated POT file for translators to use.

This version also has a new default: users will no longer receive email notifications by default for every spam comment that people attempt to post.

A few more words about comment spam: Comment spam is a global web epidemic. It is not specific to b2evolution, not even to blog engines. Just like email, any site that lets users post content freely is subject to spam these days. At this time, spam is being posted by real people hired at very low wages in India, Pakistan, Philippines, China and other countries offering cheap labor and decent internet connections. Therefore most automated spam fighting techniques based on detecting humans vs. robots no longer work. The best approach at this time seems to make it much faster for you to remove spam than for people to post spam. This is already the case with this version of b2evolution. Upcomming versions will further improve on this path.

In 2011, you can expect version 4.1 & 4.2 with additional features. We are also starting works on version 5 that will focus on community building features. More on this as we enter the new year...

Happy holidays to all of you!

This version is actually stable but we want to fix a few typos in the messages here & there before naming it a stable release. There are no remaining known bugs in this release and there will be no new features before version 4.1.

Here is a quick list of changes since version 4.0.1:

  • Fixed tinyurls (@evofactory)
  • Allow closing of antispam popup by pressing Escape (@evofactory)
  • Enhanced slug manager (@fplanque)
  • Keep a backup when replacing a file by upload (@evofactory)
  • Additional manual/help links in backoffice.
  • Upgraded jQuery to version 1.8.2.
  • Cleaned up form CSS
  • Added Comment::author2() with skins v2 style params.
  • Bug fixes.

b2evolution 4.0.1-beta released

Posted by fplanque on Oct 18, 2010 in New releases

We are happy to annonce that b2evolution version 4.0.1-beta has been released.

Download here »

Although it is pretty stable, we still call this version beta because there are minor bugs we are aware of and we want to fix before the final 4.0 release.

We bumped the version number up to 4.0.1 because we felt we needed to add a few little features, especially to improve the speed of spam moderation operations.

Of course, as previously announced, this version also comes with a fully functioning twitter plugin, conforming to the new twitter API.
