b2evolution on SourceForge.net

Posted by fplanque on Aug 20, 2003 in b2evolution.net

b2evolution's development efforts have been moved to sourceforge.net lately. So if you're interested in contributing, localizing or even just in the latest cutting edge releases, feel free to visit: https://sourceforge.net/projects/evocms/ .

Actually the hot spot is the CVS repository. If you're unfamiliar to CVS and sourceforge.net you'll be able to find introductory information on this page: https://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=85535 .

CVS will let you seemlessly update your b2evolution test/develoment platform with the daily new enhancements.

Right now, for example, the CVS version has full internationalization/localization support... and a few translations are already available. ;)

Please note however that you should only use the CVS version of b2evo for testing and development purposes. You should always wait for stable (normal) releases before putting it into production.

...that is unless you know what you're doing of course ;)

“/projects/evocms/"? C-M-S? Sounds like you’ve got big plans, Fracois. I would like to contribute, sometime, but I’m too afraid I’d end up busy with something else and neglect the task at hand. Hrm.

Well, people tend to use b2evolution’s power more and more beyond the scope of a simple blog. Moreover it is sooo easy to extend b2evo to domains that have nothing to do with blogging…

You’re welcome to contribute… maybe you’ll just want to start with implementing something small so you won’t get bothered before you’re done! ;) From your blog, you seem to be a pretty gifted designer… how about doing a skin for example? ;)

Writing manual pages and tutorials is also a relatively quick though very helpful contribution…

Finally, regarding the main code, there are certainly dozens of little enhancements to be made…

I think my design cycle is too long to try to make a skin. I’ve been working on a new design for my own site for a month and a half and have only just begun getting anywhere. Though I do have a few previous (scrapped) efforts that I could turn into a skin.

Documentation is certainly a possibility. I think I’d be reasonably useful in that regard.

My preference would be to do some actual coding, though. What “little enhancements” need to be made? I suppose I’ll have to figure out how to use CVS, then..

Okay Jordan. Having CVS up and running is paramount if you are going to contribute some code.

I suggest you set it up and mail me when you’re there. I’ll send you a short list of features needed at that moment. If you’re not sure about how fast you’ll implement, I’ll send you a list of non critical features ranging from wordcount support (can be done in a couple of hours including testing) to Movable Type import or cross posting to LiveJournal (requires more concentration! ;D)… a new spell checker, javascript enhancements, more stat reports in the backoffice, pruning of stats, polls, advanced user management…

It depends on what you want to do and of course, you can also come up with ideas of your own ;)

If you want to help with the cutting edge developement and debugging, I’m in the process of setting up a bug/task tracker that’s a little better than the (ugly and poor) one on SourceForge. :P

Alright, when I get home from work I’ll see about the CVS. Something relatively trivial like wordcount sounds like a good way to get my feet wet.
