WebHostingPad review

Permalink February 4, 2008 • Category: Reviews

General

WebHostingPad was formed in 2005 as a divison of Omnis Networks which has been in the web hosting industry since 1999 and currently manages more than 200,000 accounts.

  • CEO: Gary Chon
  • Offices: Chicago, IL
  • Data center: Chicago, IL

User experience

Our Web Hosting Pad test site showed good response and uptimes.

...

WebHostingPad is a standard cPanel host. There is a little bit of wasted white space in the panel skin, but that is definitely not any major issue.

Only a single concurrent FTP connection is possible. This is annoying if you want to update your site often with large amounts of files. You will not be able to parallelize uploads.

Customer satisfaction

WebHostingPad is a fairly recent hosting company growing very fast due to their very competitive price.

Technical specs

WebHostingPad custom builds their own servers. Each web server has 8 cores with 12 GB of system RAM. Furthermore, the shared web hosting service is delivered from a load-balanced cluster of servers and files are served from a Netapp network attached storage device. This ensures high availability and consistent performance for all user accounts.

  • MySQL 5 - Up to date
  • PHP 5 - Up to date
  • UTF-8 and mbstring: supported

Overall, the platform is state of the art.

Section updated September, 2010.

Security

Web Hosting Pad is running suPHP and there is strong isolation between user accounts.

They support FTPES and SFTP for ftp transfers and allow concurrent ftp uploads as well.

Overall security is good.

Hosting Plans

WebHostingPad offers a single hosting plan. Note that at that price, the free domain offer is only valid for one year.

WHP Plan
Monthly fee (× 12 mo) $3.95
Monthly fee (× 24 mo) $2.95
Monthly fee (× 36 mo) $2.49
Monthly fee (× 48 mo) $1.99
Disk space Unlimited
Transfer Unlimited
Included domain name Free for 1 year
Domains per account Unlimited
b2evo auto install yes

Options

  • SSH: $25

JackI have a new b2 blog and chose webhostingpad based in part by the good reviews. I have been up and running for about a month now and it serves 2 different web sites. I used their support often during the first week and their response as always been fast (a few hours even) and correct. I would also say that any of the problems I had could have been caused by my lack of experience. I have not had any trouble since and am very happy with their services. I highly recommend webhostingpad.

Stephen BererWebhostingpad has done an extremely poor job of providing support. They don't/can't answer such direct questions as "where can I find the spam folder for my email account?" Their system crashed, damaging my site. They would not repair it, and apparently don't even have backups older than 3 weeks. Their manager did not respond to emails asking for help and clarification. All in all, they have been a very disappointing company to deal with.

BillI've got four active blogs on their server and have had for nearly a year now, with zero problems. Once in a blue moon the server will be down for a few minutes, but by and large, they have been extremely dependable, and the load time for my pages is excellent, a couple of seconds at most. Their tech support was good when I was getting set up, and I haven't had to call them since. I'm getting ready to renew for another year. I really don't know how they could be much better, although I can't speak for high traffic sites, as mine are relatively low traffic. I have no hesitation recommending them, though.

Allen JacksonThey have been hosting my blog and gallery for 4 months. Had a number of minor problems which their customer service handled extremely quickly.
However, the downside is the response time - on average about 40 secs to get any response and sometimes just timing out. Customer service have transferred me to a different server, but still same result. Now considering a change.

Michael FranklinWell – everyone else seems impressed but I am not. I am disgusted with their casual rudeness. Two months ago I applied for two sites for our church. Unknown to me, another committee member was doing the same thing, so I had to ask for cancellation. Webhostingpad allows cancellation and refunds. They set two domain names in place and debited me for those and hosting costs – both sites. On application they refunded me for one, but deny having processed the other. I sent them (May 20th) a copy of my bank account showing the two debits naming them, but they have remained rudely silent ever since. So I may have lost it. Be cautious friends! Companies like this love to ride the profit, but they turn their backs on their own stupidities if it means paying someting back!. I am keeping well clear now.

RobI set up my first site in years with them back around April, and after some initial connection issues which tech support was quick to figure out (average wait between e-mails was about 5 minutes and this was at 1 AM) they got me online. Site loads fast, easy to use for a relative noob like myself, and I've only experience downtime once, which is to be expected. And who can complain about the price?

GabiWe must be talking about a different Webhostingpad
My experience was horrible. I have multiple sites hosted by them and several times the server was down and had to call to have them fix it. once it was a "registration issue" ????? a year after I signed up??
the second time it was a server wide something that affected my account and was easy to fix. so why wasn't it fixed automatically????
Don't go with them. a major disappointment. I have lost two domain name because they don't even warn you that your subscription is running out.

Service is beyond rude, if any it can take up to a week to get an answer from the "24/7" support.

fangoonoI was having an issue with my little brother's domain (hosted by another company) pointing to my hosting space (hosted by WBP). This issue has been going on for 2 weeks and I kept going back and forth with both companies until your rep Chris totally fixed the issue and his domain worked. If he hadn't, my brother was going to go with another company for hosting and spend money he can't afford to spend at this time. Thank you so much for your service! He and I both really appreciate it.

JosephWell I regret choosing webhostingpad for sure.
In choosing a web host, you can check complaints their having in the BBB.
I didn't know and got ripped off by WebHostingPad with illegal non-approved payments. I asked them to reimburse those but they softly told me I could talk to their lawyers if I had any complaint but there was no way they would give the money back. So what seemed a very cheap price turned out to be more expensive than other competitors. SO beware of WebHostingPad: they are legally defended robbers!

Here are the processed complaints at the BBB against WebHostingPad:
These complaints concerned :
6 regarding Advertising Issues

1 - Advertised terms not honored
4 - Bait & switch advertisement
1 - False or unsubstantiated claims in advertisement
22 regarding Billing or Collection Issues

4 - Failure to correct billing errors
3 - Improper collection practices
6 - None of the Above - Credit, Billing or Collection Complaint Issue
2 - Unauthorized bank debits
7 - Unauthorized credit card charges
2 regarding Contract Issues

1 - Failure to honor a contract or agreement
1 - None of the Above - Contract Complaint Issue
5 regarding Customer Service Issues

3 - Failure to provide promised assistance or support for products or services
2 - Inappropriate behavior by customer service personnel
3 regarding Product Issues

1 - Defective, damaged, or incorrect product received
2 - None of the Above - Product Quality Complaint Issue
14 regarding Refund or Exchange Issues

8 - Failure to honor promised refunds, exchanges, or credit
4 - Failure to honor refund, exchange or credit policies
2 - None of the Above - Refund or Exchange Complaint Issue
21 regarding Service Issues

5 - Failure to honor service estimate or agreement
14 - Improper or inferior service

I thought you ought to know! I would have liked before i signed there!Cheers!

DEXThis is worst web host ever!!! I made mistake and paid 2 years in front. My nightmare started after few months of using it. Up-time is terrible, on every few weeks you will have some time when your page will not be shown. Without any reason. But what happened 2 days ago is a TOP. For whole 2 days I dont have my website up. No emails, no nothing. I didn got single email that they will change HDD on servers. When I ask to support they always said "your page will be up within 2 hours". And those 2 hours last 2 days now. And I am afraid it will be more than 2 days. So if you want to go with them try it. You will make mistake I ensure you.

ShannonBeware!!! Check their BBB status. I used this company, bought a one year service agreement and paid for it up front. Somewhere in the small fine print they had some automatic renewal trick - but of course they couldn't charge my credit card without my explicit permission. However, they demanded I pay for a second year of service because I had not canceled. They never provided the second year of service but they filed a complaint with a collections agency, damaging my credit. I refuse to pay for something I didn't ask for, and that was never provided. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and webhostingpad never even responded to the BBB! LOOK OUT!

Danielle VI set up web hosting with this service, and they sent my login info, copying some bogus email "rammal@aol.com." When I asked for them to correct the mistake, they sent another password, and AGAIN copied this random guy. They finally sent me a secure email with a new password that DOESN'T work. Now their help desk keeps asking me questions like "send us your full name" as if they have no records of my order. I'm very disappointed with their service so far.

oneheartA month ago i subscribed to webhostingpad.com. They deducted a one time fee of abt USD$100 for my 3 years of subscription. 2 days ago, i realised that they deducted another USD$160 from my account. When i emailed them and asked about the additional charges, they told me that i clicked on some 30 days trial add-ons. Within that 30 days, if you did not call to unsubscribe the add-ons, they will auto-renew for you and deduct the payment from your bank account.

No matter how i tried to reason out for them, i told them to terminate the add-ons for me and ask for a refund. They just insisted that it is not refundable. The manager whom i corresponded with listed a few things that cost only $12 when i asked why i was charged an additional $160, they did not list down the add-on features. I find that it so such a dodgy sales tactics that they are using to cheat ignorant customers.

If ever i did click to a 30 days trial add-ons, they should ask me if i want to renew it and not jus deduct from my account without my knowledge!

I made several calls to the IUS Webhostingpad call centre from Singapore and they insisted that they cant do a refund. Finally after reasoning out with the customer service officer, he refunded me part of the charges. In the end i still had to pay the additional $50 USD.

D.D.Merino"Buyer Beware". Last year I saw a WebHosting pad ad that said "Free Domain Name for Life". In fact I still have a screen capture of that ad. Also in their website main page it states there "Free Domain Name", so when I received an email that they charged me this year for domain name renewal I told them about the free domain name which they said is only for the first year. They said that in the users agreement (I guess buried somewhere) that it states it is only free for a year. Well, this is certainly false advertising. SO BUYER BEWARE. There are others hosting site that really offer free domain names, but Webhotingpad is not one of them. I made the mistake of signing up for 3 years.

MatthewTheir service was good at first but has been going downhill. 24/7 online support chat, but the techs can only handle minor issues and almost always tell me to email their supervisor. When I ask why they cannot pass the question themselves they end the session. That will really Tick you off! Nothing to do about it.

I needed an ssl so I asked for one. They took the money quick and were friendly and acted fast to get things on the ball but 10 days later ii is still in the works.

When in preparation for getting the ssl installed I asked for a permanent IP. When they switched they took the site off the old IP and it went down until the IP propagation was over. I new something was not right 3 days later when the site was STILL DOWN. I emailed tech, may times, with my concerns. They kept brushing me aside. Finally after testing myself I found out that the did not enter proper IP addresses int o the nameservers. In all it took 5 days to get my site back up fully. I was told 30 minutes max.

I have to send 5+ emails for any response. Even though I still have a year of hosting paid for with them that they will not refund I moving host.

I will admit they are the cheapest, but if you loose one or two hours worth of online sales due to service issues you could have got a better host for free. I promise that I could go on and on about how bad there service is.

I only recommend them for non-critical web hosting. You get what you pay for it seems.

matthewOk, quick update. The SSL is finally installed. The customer service is just so so so slow and clumsy. That is the biggest problem but that is so important with hosting. Some of the people that work there are very nice and friendly, but still the service is slow.

I will admit the pricing is unbelievable. And the server I am on seems fast and up to date. If you are on a tight budget and are not real worried about some hiccups along the way it may work for you. But if you have a critical application you might want to stay away.

BobI have many sites hosted at webhostingpad. Overall I liked the service and pricing. However, their policy to to setup the autonewal to your CC. If it does not renew they turn you over to a collection agency, even if you did not want to renew, plus suspend your site. Bad policy and is probably illegal tactic. That is my only complaint and may choose another hosting service.

Robbie SymborskiIf you speak English, do yourself a favor, go with an English based hosting company. While these Indian based hosts may look affordable on the surface, it will cost you in terms of support time in the future. Pick up the telephone and CALL tech support before you purchase or subscribe to any service. Establish a verbal point-of-contact before you chunk your hard earned money away to pay-pal in the sky.

WebHostingPAD is on my top ten list of WORST web hosts for the English speaking community. There are comparably priced services owned and operated by US/UK/CANADA based hosts ( you might not know them because they spend their time and money maintaining their servers and network links not MARKETING for free all over the w.w.wastebasket. )

If you like webhostingpad I can show you twice the service level for half the money from at leaast 5 other hosting solution providers in the US/UK/CANADA.

WebHostingPad ReviewWebHostingPad is probably the cheapest web hosting company that I've seen so far. The reviews about WebHostingPad are kind of mixed. My personal experience with them has been pretty good so far. When I signed up with them, they were offering hosting for $3 per month. Recently, they have reduced the price to around $2 per month. I had an issue with my MySQL database once, so I contacted customer support using the live chat option. The response was speedy and came up to my expectation.

UnhappyI hate instances where someone can say "You get what you pay for," but this is very much one of them. Webhostingpad may be the cheapest, but is by far the worst ever. "Our Admin Support went on vacation last week, the junior admin didn't know how to deal with high demands on the server, so all Mod Security was turned off, and we're just fixing it as customers call in" Do I need to explain how stupid this is? "Our higher level admins work in the server room, I don't know if you've ever been in a server room, but it's loud!"

A 5 year old would have better judgment than anyone in this company. I cannot wait to switch away from webhostingpad.

ed hanksI am writing to let you know that I had a horrific experience with webhostingpad.com a site you gave pretty good ratings on. I had cancelled on the renewal date but they charged me anyway. My credit card company reversed the charges after a thorough investigation, but Webhosting pad then turned the small charge over to a collection agency. The account was managed by a 75 year old disabled man. Webhostingpad refused to call me back when I called them, saying that "they do not make outgoing calls".

Just want you to know that I would never recommend Webhostingpad.
