My b2evolution Version: Not Entered

Hi, I'm Mike from http://www.BotScout.com. BotScout is a free anti-bot, anti-spam service that has plugins for most of the major forums, blogs, and CMS's like SMF, phpBB, VBulletin, Joomla, Drupal, etc.

We'd love to be able to offer a free plugin for b2evolution. Implementing the BotScout code is usually very easy, and if anyone here would like to help code one I'd be more than glad to help. I'm pretty sure that the general or "generic" BotScout code could be easily adapted for use with b2evolution, but creating the actual plugin package for b2evolution is something I wouldn't have a clue as to how to do.

Would someone here like to collaborate on this? I'm thinking it would be a pretty quick job for anyone familiar with creating b2evolution plugins (and I'd help in whatever way I could).

If you like, please feel free to contact me here, or by PM, or through the contact form on the BotScout site.

Mike

No one even slightly interested in a new plugin for b2evolution? Is b2evolution not under active development perhaps, or...?

Okay, well, thanks for your assistance.

IP bans aren't the way forward ( unless you have a time limit for the ban in a similar way to cphulk ).

I'd,also, never make my anti-spam rely on a 3rd party server ( hence why I'd never use Askimet et al )

Making your product into an evo plugin really wouldn't take much effort .. have a look at how other plugins react with 3rd party sites ( ping plugins are probably a good start )

1) It's not an IP ban. BotScout looks at the IP, the email, and the username to see if there are matches. It returns the number matches for each element, and lets you (or the software in the plugin) decide what to do (allow, ban, delay, ask for more info, whatever you want to do). A time limit could be used if desired, similar to cphulk.

2) I totally understand your reluctance to depend on a 3rd party server. Unfortunately without hosting complete, frequently updated copies of the entire bot database, there's no practical way to offer a service like this. (The database is hundreds of megs in size and is updated every couple of minutes.) Our plugins are heavily used by a lot of other applications similar to b2evolution, but if no one here is interested that's okay.

I think you're right, it would be fairly simple for someone familiar with b2evolution. We generally look for some assistance within the application's community to make sure that the plugin works correctly. We're not familiar with b2evolution and don't want to make a lot of beginner's mistakes, foul up the plugin requirements or function, etc.

We think it would be a useful plugin to have and if someone would like to help create a BotScout plugin, please feel free to contact us.

If the b2evolution community isn't interested, that's okay.
